Autonomous mowing glossary
Plain-English definitions for the language of autonomous acreage mowing — covering robotic mower technology, Northern Rivers terminology, and how the AutoAcre subscription works.
Autonomous mowing
The use of a robotic mower to maintain a property's grass on a daily, unattended schedule. Autonomous mowers operate without an on-site driver, navigating with GPS and sensors, and run every day rather than on a contractor's fortnightly visit cycle.
Robotic mower
A mower that operates without a human driver. Consumer robotic mowers (e.g. Husqvarna Automower) are designed for small lawns. Commercial robotic mowers like the PANDAG G1 are built for acreage and handle larger areas, steeper slopes, and longer operating cycles.
PANDAG G1
Commercial-grade autonomous robotic mower used by AutoAcre across all properties. Specifications include up to 25 acres per day of coverage, 38-degree slope handling, and GPS-RTK precision navigation. AutoAcre is the authorised PANDAG G1 dealer for the Northern Rivers, NSW.
Acreage
Rural or semi-rural property of one acre (about 0.4 hectares) or more, typically held as a lifestyle property rather than a working farm. In the Northern Rivers, lifestyle acreage typically ranges from 0.5 to 5 acres.
Lifestyle property
A rural or semi-rural property held primarily for residential and lifestyle reasons rather than agricultural production. Lifestyle properties commonly carry acreage that requires regular mowing but is not used for crops or stock.
Northern Rivers
Region of north-eastern New South Wales, Australia, including Byron, Ballina, Lismore, Tweed and Richmond Valley local government areas. The region is characterised by a subtropical climate, high rainfall, and many lifestyle acreage properties — a combination that produces aggressive grass growth and demanding mowing requirements.
Byron Shire
Local government area in the Northern Rivers region of NSW, Australia, encompassing Byron Bay, Bangalow, Newrybar, Ewingsdale, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads, Federal, Myocum, Tyagarah, Brooklet, Clunes, Eureka and Nashua. AutoAcre's primary service area.
Ride-on mower
Driver-operated mower used by traditional acreage mowing contractors. Typical contractor practice is a fortnightly visit with a ride-on mower, leaving grass long for most of each two-week cycle.
Zero-turn mower
Driver-operated mower with independent rear-wheel drive that allows it to pivot in place. AutoAcre keeps a zero-turn mower on hand as backup coverage when an autonomous unit is being repaired or replaced.
Fortnightly mowing
The standard contractor mowing cycle — a single visit every two weeks with a ride-on or zero-turn mower. Produces a saw-tooth pattern of grass length: tidy for a few days after each visit, overgrown for the rest of the cycle.
Subscription mowing
A managed mowing service billed at a fixed monthly rate, typically including equipment, maintenance, monitoring and breakdown cover. AutoAcre's residential autonomous mowing subscription runs $600–$800 per month and replaces the need for contractor visits, owned mowers, or DIY mowing.
Mowing zone
A defined area of a property within which the autonomous mower operates. AutoAcre maps multiple mowing zones during installation so the mower can rotate coverage across the property and avoid double-mowing fresh sections.
Exclusion zone
An area within a property's boundary that the autonomous mower is configured to avoid — for example, garden beds, pools, play areas, ornamental landscaping or septic field covers. Exclusion zones are mapped during installation.
Charging dock
Small fixed station, mains-powered, where the autonomous mower returns to recharge between mowing runs. AutoAcre typically installs the dock near a shed, garage or boundary so it is unobtrusive.
GPS-RTK
Real-Time Kinematic GPS — a satellite navigation technique that improves location accuracy from several metres to a few centimetres. The PANDAG G1 uses GPS-RTK to maintain precise mowing patterns and stay inside boundary maps.
Slope handling
The maximum gradient an autonomous mower can safely operate on, measured in degrees. The PANDAG G1 handles slopes up to 38 degrees, well above most consumer robotic mowers (typically 20–25 degrees) and many ride-on mowers.
Mulching
A mowing pattern that returns finely cut clippings to the lawn rather than collecting them. Daily autonomous mowing produces clippings short enough to mulch back into the soil, reducing fertiliser need and improving turf health.
Kikuyu
A vigorous, drought-tolerant warm-season grass common across Northern Rivers acreage. Aggressive growth makes kikuyu particularly well-suited to daily autonomous mowing, which keeps the runners short and prevents clumping.
Paspalum
Coarse-bladed grass common in subtropical paddocks and acreage. Daily autonomous mowing produces a finer, denser paspalum sward over time than fortnightly contractor mowing.
Couch grass
Fine-bladed warm-season turfgrass widely used on Northern Rivers lifestyle properties. Couch responds well to consistent daily mowing, producing a tight, manicured surface.
Buffalo grass
Broad-bladed turfgrass tolerant of shade and traffic, common on Northern Rivers lifestyle properties. Daily autonomous mowing maintains buffalo at a consistent height without scalping.
Vegetation management
Industry term for ongoing control of grass and low vegetation on commercial sites — councils, schools, resorts, solar farms and similar. AutoAcre delivers vegetation management as managed PANDAG G1 deployments scoped per site.
Grounds management
End-to-end maintenance of a property's outdoor surfaces — mowing, edging, monitoring and reporting. AutoAcre's residential subscription is a grounds-management service rather than a per-visit contracting arrangement.
Solar farm vegetation management
Specialised vegetation control beneath and between solar arrays. Conventional mowers risk damaging panels; autonomous mowers like the PANDAG G1 can navigate the tight rows of a solar farm safely and on a continuous schedule.
Repair SLA
Service Level Agreement for fault response. AutoAcre's residential subscription includes a 7-day repair SLA: if the autonomous unit fails, AutoAcre repairs or replaces it within seven days and provides a zero-turn ride-on backup at no extra cost in the meantime.
Weekly photo report
Short report sent to AutoAcre customers each week including current property photos, the autonomous mower's operational status, and any maintenance notes. Used by absentee owners and short-stay rental managers to confirm presentation without visiting on-site.
